The great thing about potluck dinners is that you can try a little bit of everything, then go back for seconds of the things you like most. I guess this isn’t an entirely new concept to restaurants considering Spanish tapas eateries have been on the scene for years, but until recently, my only encounters with the Southern comfort version were at large family gatherings. Within the past few months, however, two restaurants offering familiar local cuisine in snacks and small plates have opened in the city... Read more.
he Science Museum of Virginia’s current exhibit, “Race: Are We So Different?”, a project of the American Anthropological Association, helps Richmonders look at (and hopefully talk about) race as the social construct that it is—the history of it, the science (or lack thereof) behind it, and how the individual experiences it in everyday American life… Read more.
The Children’s Museum of Richmond (CMOR) never gets old. At least not to my three year old. We’ve been countless times to both the downtown and Short Pump locations, and a trip to “THE museum,” as Norah calls it, always delivers… Read more.
Here at the Richmond Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Richmond Region tourism office, we recently launched a new tourism video highlighting the Richmond Region. The video shows glimpses of the many wonderful things the Region has to offer visitors—and residents. “These videos allow us to share the stories that set us apart as a destination in an authentic way,”…Read more.
“I’ve been to wineries, I’ve been to wine country, but I’ve never been to a wine expo,” is what I said before I checked the Virgina Wine Expo off my destination RVA resolution list. The premier wine event, exclusively featuring Virginia wine, was held at the Richmond Convention Center Friday, February 24 through Sunday, February 26, 2012 and showcased 75 Virginia wineries and over 450 bottles of award-winning wine… Read more.
When someone asks me where to eat in Richmond, my first answer is always Comfort. It’s the epitome of our fair city, serving Southern food at its finest. Coming from a large Southern family, I’ve tried every classic comfort dish you can imagine… But I never knew Southern food could taste so gourmet until I found Comfort… Read more.
Wouldn’t it be great if you could venture into Richmond to meet a well-informed tour guide who would lead you to up-and-coming and award-winning restaurants, tell stories of the city’s noteworthy past, and point out unique shops and galleries along the way? I found out that you can do just that on a Real Richmond Food Tour… Read more.
I’ve always had a knack for finding four-leaf clovers, and now my bit o’ Irish luck seems to be translating to the hidden restaurant gems of Richmond. First there was Stella’s with its delicious Greek cuisine, and now, I’ve discovered Pescados China Street tucked away on Oregon Hill a few residential blocks away from the campus of VCU... Read more.
Even though Richmond’s seen some truly fantastic weather lately, we’ve still got several weeks of winter left. On the days when the temperatures are a bit more seasonal–and much-needed trips outside are cut short by frozen fingers and toesies–local parents are left asking one question: What are supposed to do now?… Read more.
A new year means a fresh start. It’s a motivation for change, improvements, risks and results… You know what I’m getting at, right? It’s time to make those NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS! … I refuse to set myself up for failure again in 2012, so I’m trying a new approach. Instead of focusing on myself, I’m going to focus on my surroundings… Read more.
One of my favorite Richmond events is the Greek Festival, my only destination for really great, really authentic specialties like spanikopita, tiropita and moussaka. Until now. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll still go to the festival for the wonderful food, atmosphere and people watching, but now, I’ve found a place to satisfy my appetite for Greek year round. How have I not discovered Stella’s before now?... Read more.
When you tell a two year old you’re going to see lots of lights in a garden, the reaction is part excitement and part confusion. When I told Norah we were going with her best friend Nina and her family, the reaction was ecstatic. With great anticipation and lots of bundling (it took a lot of explaining to convince a 2 year old to wear two pairs of paints) we headed out. As always, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden delivered... Who isn’t a little fascinated by ancient Egyptian culture? They built giant pyramids without the aid of modern machines, mummified the dead in pursuit of eternal life, and maintained a civilization for 3,000 years. They produced rock star royalty, including King Tut and Cleopatra, and their hieroglyphs were one of the first, and most artistic, forms of written communication. Lucky for Richmond, for the next few months we don’t have to travel 6,800 miles to see some relics of this super society for ourselves... Read more.
I have a confession to make: I am a total sucker for anything vaguely yuletide in nature. Christmas trees? Love them. Giant inflatable Santas on your front lawn? I support you. Christmas songs? That’s me you hear singing…and probably sobbing. So imagine my utter joy when the time came for my husband and me to take our three-year-old son to RVA on Ice at Richmond CenterStage for his first ice skating experience. Read more.
I love the romantic sound of the French language, but I don’t know much about French food. My encounters with the cuisine are typically limited to an occasional breakfast croissant. After a recent visit to La Parisienne Bistro & Café, however, I’m ready for more. This sleek new restaurant shines in the midst of Richmond’s downtown high rises with its floor to ceiling windows, luscious display of pastries and artfully arranged meals…

“I’m the snail with the mail, I’ll deliver without fail.” We’ve been singing that country tune every half hour since we saw Theatre IV’s production of A Year with Frog and Toad at the Barksdale Theater on Friday. The sweet play about two forever friends did, indeed, deliver – it delivered lots of laughs, tender moments and a memorable evening for our family complete with huge hugs and shouts of “Thank You” and “Best Night Ever!”… Read more.
It seems everyone has an opinion about barbecue. Vinegar or tomato based…pulled or chopped…sauced or rubbed…grilled or roasted. And here in the South, people take their barbecue and their opinions very seriously. But for this Southern girl, a good barbecue sandwich is a good barbecue sandwich… Read more.
Let me be upfront by saying that I’m not “big” on festivals in general. The crowds, the waiting, the inevitable meltdown when you have a toddler in tow…UGH. Well, I am now a festival convert, thanks to the women of The Junior League of Richmond and their truly incredible annual event, Touch a Truck... Read more.
The Children’s Museum of Richmond holds a very special place in my heart. Two years ago this December, my son took his first steps there. I know, we are “so Richmond” you probably want to smack us. That memory, combined with the fact that CMoR is consistently voted one of Richmond’s best museums by the readers of Richmond Magazine, made me jump at the chance to check out their newest exhibit, The Zula Patrol: Mission Weather… Read more.
It’s the final days of Fabergé Revealed, a special exhibition at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA), and the show of more than 500 spectacular objects is definitely worth a visit before it closes on Sunday, October 2, 2011... Read more.
